With a few exceptions services at St.
Giles follow the forms laid out in Common
Worship [CW]. Morning Prayer services usually follow
the order for Morning Prayer on Sunday, beginning at page 30, and
Eucharist and Family Communion services follow the Order for Holy
Communion (Order 1), beginning at page 167.
Hymns are usually to be found in Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard. The monthly cycle of services, with some exceptions is as in the facing table. Common Worship is a title which reflects earlier days of an English prayer book. One of the key attributes of the new book is that of flexibility. Within the specified structure of a service, there are choices and alternatives far beyond those we have had in previous forms of service. For this reason the service of Holy Communion is downloaded in a form tailored to our needs week by week. Our pewsheet provides the vehicle for this but, in order to minimise the weekly printing load, it is supplemented (even when the service is said rather than sung) by the copy of the musical setting, itself having been updated to reflect the revisions Common Worship has introduced. Both Common Prayer and the Alternative Service Book printed in full the readings allocated for each Sunday, as well as the holy days throughout the church's year. Common Worship does not include the more extensive selection of readings, which cover a cycle of three years rather than one year (Common Prayer) and two years (Alternative Service Book). These readings are to be found in a separate volume, Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), and they could (in theory) be used with any form of service. Revised Common Lectionary The readings for the third year (Year C) came into use late in 2000, at the beginning of a new year for the church. Page numbers, relating to communion readings in Revised Common Lectionary, are given in the pewsheet each Sunday. Return to St. Giles Mountnessing Homepage |
